  • Spaces & site
How the spaces connect to each other and respond to orientation, views and natural light.
  • Sketches
First drawings exploring spatial arrangements and furniture groupings.
  • Materials research
Initial research into finishes, textures and surfaces.
  • Furniture & equipment
Furniture typologies, appliances and equipment needed per space.

goal:Explore design concepts and narrow down to one preferred concept.duration:Typically 2–4 weeksrevisions:usually 2 rounds
  • Site plan
The project on its site: access points, outdoor areas and landscape relationships.
  • Floor plan
Size, proportion and location of every room, with preliminary furniture layouts and circulation.
  • Elevations
Key interior and exterior elevations: proportions, openings and material transitions.
  • Sections
Cut-through drawings establishing heights and spatial volumes.
  • Area analysis
A check that the program fits the available footprint.
  • Preliminary finishes
A coordinated palette of flooring, wall treatments, countertops and ceilings.
  • Preliminary renders
Schematic 3D views of key spaces showing light, materials and spatial quality.
Phase

Design development

goal:Refine the approved concept into a fully detailed, coordinated design.duration:Typically 3–6 weeksrevisions:usually 1 round
  • Outline specifications
Materials, products and installation standards for every finish and system.
